Start your remote meetings off with a thoughtful question that gets people to know each other as people instead of just their positions. Instead of the analyst, sales professional and data entry, let people know each other as Bob, Mary and Louise.
Before you decide that they don’t know what to do, it may be helpful to inquire into what they think they need to be successful. It could be that they are stuck with a new challenge with a customer. Or they are having personal issues that are distracting, or perhaps they have heard rumors about themselves or the company that are distracting them. By taking the time to understand where they are coming from, and then addressing the issue, they may get better results.
The very thing that gets high performers promoted into leadership can be the limiter in their behavior as a leader. The drive to achieve, to be a pace setter, is what gets producers noticed and considered for promotion. But a constant drive for achievement without the human connection can damage team performance.
